Power Supply Service

TV Power Repair

A television that will not switch on, restarts on its own, or blinks its standby light is usually telling you something specific about its power supply. We measure the supply rails, check the protection circuit and repair the stage that has actually failed.

Symptoms we see most often

  • TV completely dead with no standby light
  • Standby light on but the TV will not start
  • TV restarts repeatedly or shuts down after a few minutes
  • Clicking or ticking sound at power on
  • Standby LED blinking in a repeating pattern
  • TV starts only after being unplugged for a while

Possible causes

Failed power supply components

Swollen capacitors, failed diodes and burnt fuses on the SMPS board are the most common reason a TV stops powering up.

Voltage surge damage

Fluctuating mains supply and lightning-induced surges damage the input stage of the power board and sometimes the main board too.

Protection circuit shutdown

The TV detects an abnormal current or voltage and shuts itself down to prevent damage, which shows as restarting or blinking codes.

Standby or main board fault

When the standby rail is present but the board fails to issue the power-on signal, the TV stays in standby regardless of the remote.

Safe checks you can do first

  • Test the socket with another appliance and avoid extension boards while testing.
  • Unplug the TV for five minutes, then hold the physical power button for 15 seconds before reconnecting.
  • Use the button on the TV itself in case the remote or its batteries are the problem.
  • Disconnect all external devices and cables except mains.
  • Count the blinks of the standby light and share the pattern when booking.
  • Stop using the TV immediately if you smell burning.

Do not open the television or work on its internal parts yourself. Panels and power boards hold stored electrical charge even when unplugged, so internal work should be left to a technician.
